"Meaningful Use" in a Nutshell

by Jonathan B. Stepanian, Esq.

The New England Journal of Medicine previously published a concise summary of the objectives and measures relating to the “meaningful use” requirements to qualify for Medicare incentive payments under the HITECH Act.  The New England Journal summary is helpful and provides a good overview of the meaningful use objectives.  We have reproduced and linked to the full version below:

The complete and detailed Stage I meaningful use criteria, objectives, and measures were published in the July 28, 2010 Federal Register beginning at page 44566 and will ultimately be published at 42 CFR § 495.6.  Health care providers should review those detailed objectives and measures to ensure that their chosen EHR system meets the requirements of “Certified Electronic Health Records” to qualify for Medicare incentive payments.  Attestations for compliance with the Stage I incentive program begin on April 1, 2011.
